Take it from the Ironwoman

How statistics can motivate your running - Michael Leiman

Episode Summary

I'm a 71 year old psychotherapist living in Manhattan with my cat, Stella. I have a private practice in which I see individuals, couples and groups and have done so for the last 30 years. Used to be in my office on W. 56th Street but COVID lead me to give it up and now work via telecommunications from my home. I've always loved athletics and competition and was drawn to sports where running was a key component. Baseball, softball and paddleball were long my main competitive endeavors for many years. And then I found road running! I did my first race...a 5-miler in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, sponsored by the New York Roadrunners Club more than 25 years ago and I was hooked! Not too long after that I joined the Greater New York Racing Team and I was hooked even more!! I did my first marathon here in New York in 1999, just a few days after my 50th birthday. Focusing on the Marathon was a great way of avoiding the fact that I was about to turn half a century old! Since then I've completed New York five or six times and also run a bunch of Disney World Marathons. Naturally I've run plenty of others at much shorter distances, ranging from a mile to the half. 5Ks are now my most common race and, especially in smaller events, I've managed to place in the top three of my age group pretty consistently. A bit over two years ago I was diagnosed with gastro esophageal junction cancer which means that there was a nasty tumor at the meeting place of my stomach and esophagus. That lead to some pretty rough treatment...chemo, radiation, experimental immunotherapy and surgery. Though I had to greatly reduce my mileage and, sadly, my speed along with it, I did my best to keep running a regular part of my life. Maintaining what I thought of as "my regular life," running, work, family and friends, helped me get through it all. Writing about what I was going through, mainly on Facebook, was a huge help as well, keeping me connected to a concerned and caring community. Time has passed and my 2-year since diagnosis CT Scan was excellent and that is great news as if this cancer were to return it's most likely to happen in these first two years. And it didn't! What also hasn't returned, however, is much of my speed! I'm running regularly, racing when I can but I've not yet been able to get my time under the 9 minute per mile pace in a 5K race. That's significant because my last 5K before diagnosis was at a 9:02 pace. Beat that and I will consider myself all better!
