Take it from the Ironwoman

How music and marathon running are similar - Andrea Hollandt

Episode Summary

Andrea' biography: Originally from the northern part of Germany. I grew up near the Northern and Baltic Sea and always enjoyed outdoor activities. Moved to the US in 1989 to finish my degree in economics at UC Berkeley. A good school, just outside of San Francisco, an amazingly beautiful campus for lots of different intellectual and outdoor activities. In Germany, California and Japan, running was more of a relaxing activity, with lots of stops to smell the roses and the trees. That’s also what I like about New York City, where I moved over 25 years ago. And something I always liked about running and music, the diversity of people, you meet people of different backgrounds, all ages, different cultures, different languages. The competitive running was not always easy, but after a long day at the office it always felt relaxing to go outside, exercise, do something totally different and meet other people. Whatever I’ve learning by running, I was able to use it in music as well. You have to be patient, it’s not only your brain that has to learn the different skills, whatever your goal is and whatever you want to learn, it’s also your body and your muscles that have to get used to it and practice, practice, practice. Similar to any kind of job, work, hobbies, relationships, it helps to be patient and kind to other people. My best friends around the world are still the runners and the musicians. No matter how competitive you are, you achieve much more by being kind and patient to the people around you.
